Has anyone had to move back the vang attachment point on their boom?
I recently had to replace the vang buffer bearing because it had failed. In retrospect I think I was having to bottom out the vang in order to get the leech from fluttering which caused the failure. When installing the new buffer bearing I was going to move back the attachment point one to two inches then I realized that the attachment bolts were attached through holes in the boom track, which means I would have do drill new holes, so I left it alone for now.
I guess it can be moved back as long as the boom is not to close to the arch?
Measure twice, drill once? Any ideas?

Also forgot to mention that I have an almost new battenless furling main sail.

Selden Boom Kicker

Did this on my H44. Need to make sure that the boom clears the arch when kicker is tight and boom is outboard of arch. I did this by using my toping lift to limit how low the kicker can lower the boom. I moved the attachment point back about 4 inches on the boom and did not drill new holes in the boom. I just tightened the existing bolts and friction keeps the attachment point in place on the boom. All said we get some slightly additional ability to shape the sail with the boom kicker but it is still of limited value. There was a thread on this about a year ago.

I am pretty sure the drilled holes are clearance holes for the socket cap screw that secures the slider. We have 5 or 6 hunters on or dock and the boom setup is different an all of them. I think that the dealer must set the vang and I am not sure that they have a standard. Mine was set too far back as the boom would hit the blocks on the arch if I let the topping lift down too far. I made a block to insert at the top of the vang to compensate for the difference. I don't like drilling holes everywhere.

It may be possible to get short socket cap screws that will secure the slider without relying on the holes through the boom. I have not tried this but it was one solution that I thought about.

Good luck

Thanks Guys for the input, I am going to see if I can find some shorter screws to avoid drilling additional holes in the boom? Then hopefully I can let out some on the leech line and not have the fluttering problem. Also apparently the Vang can be fitted with a spring or a gas cylinder that could eliminate the need for a topping lift and improve sail shape on certain points of sail. Has anyone upgraded with a spring or gas shock?

I just put Selden's gas spring on my 49, the boom was hiting the blocks on the travler. I tried the topping lift to keep the boom off of the blocks, it set up a vibration in the mast that would keep me awake at nite. The boom vang was all the way retracted when the boom hit the blocks. The gas/spring was easy to install and keeps the boom off the blocks. I did not move the vang on the boom. Selden said to use the topping lift when you are motoring and you don't have the main up or in the harbor. I'm going to try and find a compromise with the topping lift to see if I can keep the vibration noise down.

Thanks for the reply.
Do you remember the approximate cost of the spring/shock? I was thinking it was around $700 which is a bit pricey for me. If it is significantly less I might bite.

My boat used the rodkicker 30 heavy spring/shock $700 retail, I got it from Mauriprosailing for $420 free shipping. If you don't need the heavy spring I think it's around $380
