Several of my dock mates have new Hunters, couple of 36's and a 38 with the Selden in mast furling. I am curious why with the solid boom kicker (vang?) the boom is also supported by the Aux main Halyard acting as a topping lift. All lines are lead to the cockpit except the "topping lift" which is cleated at the mast, which would indicate that it is not normally adjusted when sailing. It also appears that the rod kickers are installed in such a way that with out the "topping lift" the boom will rest on the arch before the kicker is totally compressed. Is a "kicker" different than a solid vang? Are all 3 boats rigged wrong? What info am I missing that will make sense of this rigging?

According to the dimensioned drawing Hunter provided for my 33, the boom is supposed to be 14.36 inches above the arch. If you look at the attachment points on both the boom end and the mast end of the vang you should see that the bolts can be loosened to allow it to slide in the track for proper adjustment.

Ken My 356 has the configuration that you described. The topping lift is definately redundant to the boom kicker. It has been a long winter but I am pretty sure that if I ease the topping lift the boom kicker will compress before the boom hits the arch.

On our 380 there is a pressurised gas cylinder inside the boomkicker. this stops the boom from lowering enough to touch the arch if you dont attach the topping lift.
