I am contemplating the purchase of a 299 for cruisng Central America from Texas and living aboard once I get there. Is this a boat that is capable of this endeavor...and, has anyone out there done something similiar with this boat? Thanks! Dan

Accessibility of all systems being right up there with the first. How many people? How much of a budget do I have. How self suffient am I? Do I have room for food, water, spares, books? How do I entertain myself and crew. What features could a boat have that would be cause for rejecting that model, style, type? The last thing I would consider is choosing a make and model to force into my needs. I would define my needs and then look for a boat that would meet those needs.

Hi Dan, I've been cruising the Caribbean and South America for about 9 years in a S37 (Currently in Venezuela). The build quality is maybe not the strongest in the world but the hull is a hell of a lot tougher than a lot of other boats in the Caribbean (bendytoys and the like). As one spends at least half of ones life beating to weather it's good to have a boat that sails close to the wind and my S37 goes as close as any other I've sailed. I maybe wouldn't want to take her into the indian ocean but the longest hops around here are a week tops and you can pick your weather. I've made several modifications that may be of interest to you if you go ahead and buy one. Regards, Robert.
