We recently had a purchase survey done during which a deficiency in the propane system was found (a tee joint was found in the cabin, they are not allowed outside of the propane locker). My insurance company gave me thiry days to correct. Over the weekend I traced the entire system and there are no such tee's in the cabin. Today I called the surveyor to determine how to go about getting a full approval. He said to just sign the survey stating that the repairs had been done. He didn't need to come see it again. Does this seem odd? How the heck would anyone know if I really fixed it? David

You'd be surprised...

David, when I filled out my insurance application to BoatUS for my new boat they sent me a "self survey" form. I was supposed to check off a bunch of questions about whether the boat had certain types of through-hulls, enough fire extinguishers, etc., and either sign it myself or have it signed by a surveyor. I took that to mean that I'm signing up for all of the liability if they ever dispute whether one of the items was really as I described it...

Id want to know

Id want to know where the Surveyor saw the T...if it is on the report he must have seen it. and spent some time deciding it was leaking so he must know where it is....then Id fix it..not just say it was fixed....to satisfy the insurer time limit you may say it was fixed and take the liability...but after that make SURE it IS fixed....for you own saftey......and if there is no T inside the cabin ask the surveyor whos boat is he looking at and demand a refund or comp if there is no fitting...very odd.....I would hate to think its a standard problem and he adds it to all his survys. But I would like to give him the benifit first.

In the surveyors defense

He is highly recommended, was very thorough otherwise. I checked each line, we have 3 appliances; range, heater and BBQ. The BBQ is on its own tank, one line, never enters the cabin. The range and heater are on seperate lines running on opposite sides of the cabin back to the locker where they tee inside the locker as per the regs. So to be absolutely clear... there is nothing to be fixed. The survey never said the tee was leaking just that it was made outside the locker. When I spoke with him yesterday he checked the survey he did before ours and thinks he accidently added their not to our survey. I believe it was an honest mistake and not something to demand a refund over.David

survey error

dave, as a minimum, you should insist that he either resurvey the boat or send a letter to you and the insurance company documenting his error so that you don't have to perjure yourself. think about what would happen if you had an explosion, and had to testify in court about the "repairs" you made....

Not a problem until you have a claim

If youo advise your company that the problem is fixed and that is acceptable to them, it is not an issue until you have a claim. If the claim were a result of something that you claimed was repaired, your insurance may be void. Keep everything on the up and up, have the surveyor provide you a corrected version of the survey.

Seems odd to me, too

If the surveyor noted it as a deficiency, and it did not exist, he should provide you with a corrected report at no cost, even if he has to revisit the boat to confirm it. I certainly wouldn't make any untrue statement to anyone to cover his mistake. In any case, I wouldn't hire him again, nor advise anyone else to.
