Seeking Raymarine Raystar RS125 GPS owners in Fernandina Beach FL to Brunswick GA

Our RS125 GPS is no longer communicating with any of our instruments. We are trying to work through the Raymarine forum, to little effect, to troubleshoot this device.

If you have a pole, rail, or other accessible-mount (all you have to do is twist to remove) RS125, I'd love to be able to bring my unit to your boat to see if it works. Replacing yours with ours and lighting up your gear would define whether our problem was in the sensor or elsewhere - and we've not had any success in defining as bad an "elsewhere" in our system.

If you do, and you'd be willing, drop me a line skipgundlach@gmail.com

Thanks!

Re: Seeking Raymarine Raystar RS125 GPS owners in Fernandina

Last year my 2008 RS-125 stopped communicating also. I could not find a replacement and ended up replacing it w/ a new RS-130 that uses Seatalk Next Generation. So I also needed the Seatalk NG converter. About $400 from Defender and Raymarine support was very helpful.

It has come up a couple of times.

I just got off the phone with the RM tech guy - someone I've used before, as it turns out - and he thinks, now, that the sensor is dead.

A plug-n-play unit for NMEA connections is the GPS105 by Digital Yacht, about $150.

As I wasn't using SeaTalk, that will be my best option - unless I prove that the unit itself isn't at fault, which is what I'm trying to do by swapping into someone else' good installation.

I've been playing around most of the afternoon, confirming my computer connections, and my handheld eTrex Venture talks to all three of my computer nav programs, so my serial connection to the 125 should work, if it does (knocking out that my C120Classic isn't the problem) work in another installation.

At this point, if I'm going to have to make a change in unit, I have nothing to lose by cutting my current connections and remaking them, in case there is a connection difficulty.

So, that's the next step while I wait for someone with my setup (or any RS125 in easy-swap configuration) to write back.

Chuck Anderson (the RM contact) suggested the replacement, because by the time I made the newer ones work, it's in the $400+ range. Even replacement 125s, if you can find them, start just under $300...
