Hi all,
I think I may have posted something like this before, and yes, I've searched the archives, but I'm still looking for something that meets my needs.
I'm giving up my 79 H33 primarily because it's too expensive to keep, and a little bigger than what I need.
I've seen suggestions of Com Pac, Capri, and many others, but they seem more like daysailors. I would like the option of the occaisional weekend trip. Something else to consider is that I'm a BIG guy. 6'3" at around 300lbs. The other things I look for include:
Enclosed head
Diesel engine
Substantial Berth room
Trailerable (not crucial but it would be nice)
Inexpensive
I'd ideally like something in the 24 to 30 foot range that is capable of coastal daysailing, and as I mentioned already, the occaisional overnight.
Any ideas?

Ok, ...........

All except the inexpensive, but a used one can be had at a good cost. We cruised full time 24/7 for over 4 years, now doing about 6 months at a time. We tow to the area we want to sail. Stoed now in a local storage yard for a fraction of a slip cost! can ship to the med for under 4K or sail around the world on her own bottom (many have).

I downsized for pretty much the same reasons that you're considering. I went from a Hunter 380 to a Hunter 27. I think a lot of people overlook the H27l--the Hunter designed team put together a pretty nice boat.

It has a good sleeping berth in the stern (I regularly nap there throughout the year), it has a two burner stove-one burner electric and one butane which is enough for me to heat water for coffee and tea. It has a marine head (I upgraded to a Raritan PHII). Both sails are roller furling and I added a one man asymmetrical chute.

I also added a three blade Max prop (and I can put this boat in any dock or slip), a Webasto furnace and a good dodger (I do like my warmth). I've also added companionway doors from Cruising Concepts (this web site).

I love my little boat. It is a good overnighter and I cruise throughout the San Juan Islands. I also day sail much of the time. What more could I ask?

I like my big tanzer 28, it was cheap, had a diesel a wheel and the raised deck afford me the space of a 34 foot boat

capejt i beg you from my own experience, i just went the opposite direction, started in a cherubini designed 27. lived on it with my wife for two ish years, loved every moment of it, look around and you will find some jewels up in your area, also the cherubini 30 will fit your bill, depends on how much time you will spend aboard, but what im getting at other than the tanzer mabey? and most likely even that, if you love the h33 cherubini you will miss it, get another cherubini hunter and you will still have a boat with the same spirit.

the 30 is a phrf killer, the 27 is stiff and tough as nails, if you can find a 27 tall rig (unlikely but who knows) they are a jewel to behold, rare as the day is long and sail even better than you can imagine.

OH RUFUS!!!! I know, I know. I absolutely love my 33, but between the expenses of a boat that size and age, and the admiral no longer wanting any boat at all, I'm hoping a smaller boat (that I can singlehand) will be a workable compromise.
The H27 came out on top of the list when I last considered this, but I had forgotten about the Oday 28. Back in my earlier days I twice chartered an Oday 28 for lake sailing. For that, I was pretty impressed. I worried about it's seaworthiness for coastal sailing, but I have seen a few out there in the past few years and they seem to be handling things just fine.
More to think about!

psh, seaworthy oday 28? i have a cruising buddy that has ran into countless oday 28's in the islands, buddy boated with one that was a full time liveaboard with two adults and a small child that spent winters in the turks and caicos/south end of central america. they're very tough and have a wonderfull ride in a seaway, the 27 hunter isnt quite as nice but is easier to power up when things get light, if you end up willing to travel soon i have a 27 tall rig for sale that i will make you a deal on if you come take it away, no diesel but for this boat thats optimal, its lighter and it had a renault that was a total piece if you get my meaning.

Also take a look at the Paceship 26 (PY26). It's got 6'1" headroom and is a solid and easily handled boat. They came with a diesel or outboard. The diesels is a Yanmar YSE8 which was rock solid for us. Many folks will tell you that the boat is underpowered with the diesel but we owned one for 12 years and never had an issue on all the trips we took .

Cheers

Not sure I would call going from 33 to a 30 "downsizing" :D

I've got the same thought process going on as well though. . .my R33 is 33 foot long because I live on it. Once (if) I stop living on it, I was thinking of downsizing to something I can take to a house:

Oday 26. Some even have an 8hp diesel installed. Though, with you being 6'3", anything trailerable is going to be a squeeze.

Just my 2 cents. I know for me it would save $2600 a year on slip and insurance

Rhodes 22?

How about a Rhodes 22? Enclosed head, trailerable and a pop top.

Consider the Ericson 26-2 (or later) as an option, or its earlier incarnation as the Ericson 25+.

How about a Pearson 28! Pretty, and comfortable overnight. Our was in great condition when we sold her in 2006 to move up to an Ericson 35.

What is your budget?

I still say the Capri 26 fits perfectly:
Enclosed head - Large head for the boat size. Also has shower.
Diesel engine (version)
Substantial Berth room - queen aft berth, and the settee makes into a huge forward berth.
Trailerable - beam might be an issue requiring a permit, but weight and size are good.
Inexpensive
in the 24 to 30 foot range that is capable of coastal daysailing, and the occaisional overnight. - I spent a straight week on mine, and dozens of overnights away, plus 3 years worth of weekends sailing local and overnighting in the harbor. It had hot\cold pressure water, big icebox, enough tankage for many days, marine head w\ holding tank\macerator\level monitor, shorepower, dual batts, the required sailing\electronic gear, and a large cockpit made better with the tiller steering.

Fast boat, yet stable and easy to handle. Also roomy as can be, everywhere; side decks, cockpit, interior, everything. Even had the open stern and swim step\ladder ala later Catalinas. Also, the early ninties verion had nice wood handrails and hatch frame. Boat has nice lines, more curved in the deck line than the 270 (which it resembles), and with the well-varnished wood accents, it was quite attractive.

This is getting to be a common situation, we are all getting older. I am surprised no one mentioned the Seaward 26! It comes with a diesel, easily trailerable, self mast raising system, marine head, shoal draft if needed, walk out transom, etc. All of these benefits will save you big money and make your sailing easy. Also, worth mentioning is that Island Packet has formed a partnership with Seaward Yacht! This will elevates the status of these boats, quality already there.
