Has anyone tried adding a staysail or small jib and flying it forward of the genoa, on the spinnaker halyard in a sort of cutter rig arrangement on a B 393 or like vessel? The object is to add a little more sail for racing either on a beam reach or close hauled.

Cutter Rigging might be a way to go.

You could probably install some type of cutter rigging without much of a problem. This would probably help in lighter winds but would probably not do much in heavier winds. As for racing, when you make an adjustment like this your boat is probably going to get a new handicap so I don’t really know how much that would help. I would advise against adding any type of sail in front of the foresail. You may be getting into an engineering project without the knowledge to compute the load factors and the bracing requirements. If you did want to go ahead with a project like that I would bring it to a rigging company that has an engineer on staff. I would not want to try the “let’s see how this works” method on something like that with a boat as big as yours. There could be serious safety issues here. Good Luck. --Dan
