THIS IS MY FIRST YEAR OF OWNING A SAILBOAT AND I AM HAVING THE BOAT LIFTED OUT OF THE WATER AND PLACED ON A CRADLE. I WAS TOLD TO UNDUE THE BACKSTAY AND TO SECURE THE MAST IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE LIFTED OUT OF THE WATER. I WAS WONDERING HOW DO I SECURE THE MAST UNTIL IT IS PUT INTO THE CRADLE?

Mast

I'm not sure what the situation is on Seneca Lake. I take my mast down before it comes out of the water. My marina in Ithaca has a gin pole that is available to their customers. With a few extra hands your mast could be dropped without a gin pole. I would not take the back stay off and leave the mast up.

Not Sure

I am not sure of what you mean or are implying here. I would definitely not remove the back stay without taking the mast down ... this would be inviting trouble such as fallen mast, damaged cabin top, etc. Two options are available to you, drop the mast or leave the mast up and reduce the tension on both stays and shrouds. I have a 25 and have done it both ways. I have a roller furler and to drop my mast using a gin pole, I loosen all my shrouds, back stay, take my fore stay (w/furler) off, loosen my cathedral bolt and allow the mast (under control of the gin pole to pivot down and back. Again, with the gin pole carrying the weight of the mast, I remove the bolt and secure the mast in place with the foot over the bow pulpit and the head over the aft pulpit. I wish I could leave it up but our marina's lift will not handle a mast up situation.

Wait!

Do not remove the backstay. Okay to store with mast up.
