Second Vent / Polypropolene

Dear Peggy, I read your book, "Get Rid of Boat Odors" and found it very helpful. I have a VERY smelly holding tank that I have now removed from my Freedom 30. I'm having a custom one made in Rhode Island to replace the old one. The new tank is constructed with polypropolene (instead of polyethelene), which the manufacturer (CC Tech) said was better at preventing permeation. I have two questions: 1) Do you agree that polypropolene is better? 2) Should I have a second vent hole cut in the top? Presently there is one 3/4" vent that runs nearly vertically to the bow. I thought that if I cut a 1 1/2" hole and added a second vent (also vertically to the bow - I'm afraid to make it too low) it would improve aeration. Do you agree? Thanks in advance for your opinions on the above. Tom "Quixote" Freedom 30 Annapolis

polyprop is ok...

PE is the recommended tank material, but PP is easier to weld than polyethylene 'cuz unlike PE any "glue" will bond to it...which is why CCTech uses it. But if PP were a better choice for any other reason, all OEM tanks would be PP. None are. As for a second vent...a single 1" vent coming off the bow end of the tank (I'm assuming the tank is in the bow, and no more than about 6' from the toilet)...if not, we need to talk) to a thru-hull in the hull about a foot below the toe rail that's also far enough forward to keep it out the water even when your rails are in the water will provide all the ventilation to the tank it needs. However, why not install a Lectra/San instead of a new tank? The Bay is not "no discharge"...the discharge of treated waste is legal. A L/S won't cost you a lot more than a custom tank...doesn't require any vent, no odor to deal with...doesn't need any chemicals and doesn't ever have to be pumped out. It's also a LOT more environmentally friendly than a tank...just ONE illegally dumped tank has more negative environmental impact on the surrounding waters than 1000 boats in the same area, all using Lectra/Sans, would have in a full 24 hour period.

Lectra/San?

I'd like to know more about the Lectra/San. Any links would be greatly appreciated! And thanks for your quick response to my first post!

Lectra/San...

Several people here have 'em, and love 'em. You'll find the literature and the complete installation/operation/maintenance guide on the Raritan website at http://www.raritaneng.com Go to products, waste treatment, then Lectra/San.
