I had a PSS Shaft Seal installed on by 1977 Hans Christian 38 two years ago. To tell you the truth, I don't think it's leaked a drop. However, I uderstand that when a PSS Shaft Seal fails, it's catostrophic. That is, unlike a packing gland which starts as a slow drip and develops over time into a trickle, the failed PSS allows an onslaught of water to enter the boat. 1) Is this true? 2) Should I have some kind of emergency wrap aboard to stem the flow in event of failure? If "yes", what would you recommend. One additional question: When I torqued the boot at the seal ring when attempting to tighten the hose clamps, water squirted past the seal ring. Is this normal? Thank you for your answer. Kim Efishoff

Thanks for the great responses, and the education on the PSS. I do have one more question related to your responses. How do you "burp" the PSS. Thanks again, Kim Efishoff

To "Burp" PSS Shaft Seal you just pull back on the

Rubber Bellows when boat is in the water. (Away from Tranny and Stainless Steel "donut") You will quickly notice a flow of water and when you do release the rubber bellows and the Seal will snap back and you are done!
