I would like to add a second battery on board my boat. It seems tight in the area where the main battery and DC panel is setup. I would like to hear what other owners have done. Any ideas?

2nd battery

Hello Lee: I have a '78 h27 and both my batteries are located under the quarterberth cushion, at the forward end. There is a square pull board, which gives fair access at best. This was setup when I bought boat. If I had to do from start, I would place them under the port setee, as close to center line, and as far aft as possible. Good luck red

2nd House Bat

My 79' was set-up with 2 when I got it. I use battery box bottoms and straps w/no cover. An added support block to the stern supports the second battery. Both are 200 ah, and they are tight in the space but workable. Its really a matter of installation procedure. The first battery runs lengthwise across the compartment w/a short side against the engine wall and a long side tight to the power panel cover. The second runs lengthwise along the engine wall to the stern starting tight to bat1. This battery removes first and installs last. I'm actually thinking of adding a smaller starting battery in the space formed by the L of the other two, but that's a maybe. Hope this was helpful! GEO

You can add a total of three

The battery box area under the qtr berth, can hold three, I keep mine seperated with 2" thk sheets of closed cell foam, I also added a boxer fan vent out to the eng. compartment.

Have 2 also

Our '83 H27 came with 2 batteries also. Both are in battery boxes located in the space beneath the quarter berth, oriented athwartship. To install, first lower the battery #1 through the access hatch, hook up the cables, put on the battery box cover, slide it back and secure with a web strap screwed to the hull liner. Then drop in the second battery, hook up the cables, then secure the cover. The selector switch is installed inside the battery storage compartment, forward of the batteries. Paul --- s/v Dilemma

I added 2...

I have a '78 27. It too came with only 1 battery and no charger. I added 2 batteries for house use only. I also added an AC charger with battery switch. I located the 2 additional batteries in the cabinet/locker under the nav station. I put them in trays and strapped them down. I built a shelf over them to utilze the space above. The stand alone battery is strictly for the engine. Seems to have worked out very well. Marcus
