Got my new halyards in the mail yesterday! Whoo hoo!

Annapolis Performance Sailing is having their January rigging sale, so I took advantage of 15% off line, 25% off rigging services (like the splices. High tech line splices are $25 each without the discount!)

I now have 1/4" Yale Crystalyne main and jib halyards, some 1/4" Marlow Super Pre-Stretch for a spinnaker halyard, 30' of 1/4" New England VPC to use for outhaul and reefing line, and a bit of 3/16" New England Sta-Set for a topping lift (I don't trust me remembering to remove the backstay pigtail before hoisting the main.) Is that Vectran cored Crystalyne overkill? Sure it is! But, I guarantee I won't get anymore jib luff sag from the old, worn out double braid polyester halyards. And, this one 1/4" halyard could probably lift 3 of my O'days. :D

I've got other running rigging plans. I'll be replacing my house top jib sheet cleats with some "extreme angle" cam cleats from Viadana, and I think I'll move from my somewhat blown out jib on the Schaefer wire luff furler to a hank on jib, using a simple downhaul line to douse the jib. I've already replaced the Schaefer cam cleat on the mainsheet tackle with a nice Viadana cam cleat. The story as I hear it is that a Spanish fellow designed the cam cleat, then Harken licensed it for US distribution as the Harken H150 cleat. Then Viadana makes it for other European markets. Sailcare distributes the Viadana hardware. The Viadana cleat looks the same design as the Harken, but maybe not quite as finished as the Harken. But it looks like it works just the same as my H150's at considerably lower cost. And it fits my Schaefer double block with becket for the mainsheet. Win for me!

As soon as I'm ready to figure out the rigging of the 3x1 outhaul, and 3x1 topping lift adjustment, I'll order some Viadana blocks, and some Novabraid 3/16" double braid for the jib downhaul from Sailcare. There's no sense getting spendy just now, I won't be able to rig all this stuff until mid-March at the earliest, when I un-tarp and begin the polish. Hopefully we'll have a mild spring like last year...

As soon as my Le Tonkinois No. 1 varnish shows up, I'll be varnishing 2 tillers - one for the O'day, and another Ruddercraft for my Boston Whaler Harpoon 4.6. In my opinion, don't spend the money for Ruddercraft to do an epoxy coat and varnish job - my varnish was unacceptably soft. Money thrown down the hole, I shoulda planned to finish myself from the get-go. And here I am, wooding down and refinishing...

In the meantime, I try to keep my winter cabin fever at bay by building a kayak for the girlfriend :)
