I want a 30ft yacht to cruise solo New Zealand and Australian waters. Is the 30ft Hunter considered to be ofshore capable enough for rough open seas.

What Year is the Hunter 30?

Trevor: Rick is asking about the year of the Hunter 30. The early models were a Cherbini Designed boat. The later ones were a different designs. How far offshore will you be venturing?

Another try

I live in new Zealand, down in the roaring 40s. We often sail in 35 knot plus winds and rough seas, so I even need a good sea boat for coastal cruising. I am wondering if a Hunter 30 would do. I did not know the design changed. Which is best? I sail solo hence wanting a small boat.

Pre '83 models

You probably want to focus on models prior to the '83 model year for anything rough; I believe that was the last year they built the Cherubini design. Apocryphally, those built in the seventies are laid thicker and are even more sturdy, and I believe it was the Hunter workmanship of the mid-eighties that resulted in many of the negatives you hear about them these days so you might want to focus on the earlier boats even from that design. That said, for what you're talking about, I think I would look at something else entirely. The boat may be capable but the ride would not be fun.

Reply to Pre 83 models

Thanks for that. Us New Zealanders are a bit machonistic and tend to bash our brains out in boats. I will research out the earlier ones. Cheaper too I guess. Thanks again.
