Check the anti-siphon valve & overflow

My Bavaria has a similar symptom. In my case, the water is coming from the overflow tube connected to the anti-siphon valve in the raw water (cooling) circuit on the engine. This valve (on my boat) is located just after the raw water pump, on the bulkhead in the engine "room". A drip can occur when the valve gets contaminated with salt (it dries, and forms a crust preventing the seal from working correctly). If this is your problem, you need to clean out that valve, so that it seats correctly. Good luck.... Ken

Shaft packing gland

On my Catalina, this is the first area water collects before going to the bilge when my non - dripless packing gland does its work. I should tighten it some more but....

mystery water

I too have a 281 and had some mystery water collecting beneath my engine pan. When I removed the cushions and decking in the aft compartment, I found more water in those bilges. I finally traced it to a severe leak in the water heater (apparently the tank froze) out in the lazerette. Since yours is seawater, it obviously isn't from the water heater but my point is that water in the lazerette can find its way to your engine sumps. I have asked Beneteau for a diagram of where the water drainage channels run but haven't gotten anything from them. Are you sure that your fresh water pump seal or shaft washer is not dripping. As far as I can tell, that is the only source of sea water that can land in that area unless there is overflow from something aft of the engine compartment. I'd be happy to share info with you on 281 specifics, we both may learn things. Feel free to e-mail me directly at "wflowe2@netscape.net"

What about your rudder packing

Sandy I'm not familiar with the configuration of beneteau 28s but on my catalina 30 I had to replace the rudder packing . It was okay when the boat was at the dock but under way water came in steadily. Maybe you need to go out for an afternoon with a friend and while they steer start crawling through some lockers from stern to bow. Use a water soluable felt pen and draw lines over the inside hull area where you think water leaks may run towards the bilge.

Is the drain open from the

heat exchanger? Is the heat exchanger leaking. Is the water pump leaking? You'll have to check it when your crusing.

Things to check

As tom said, the rudder has a stuffing box gland on most boats, but the gland probably sits on a pipe that acts as a through hull. That can seep where it meets the hull. I wouldn't have thought about it a week ago, but I just had to haul out for that very reason. Also, check your exhaust hose & muffler for cracks and check the through hull fitting for your raw water intake.

Aft leaks

Check your rudder post. I have a First 310 and found water in the aft suite. Tracked it to the rudder post. Sleeve was leaking when under power since boat stern squats when under power. I am in process of getting ideas as how to eliminate problem. See Rudder post leak in forum.

Could be deck to hull joint?

I haven't personally inspected a B281, but many of the newer boats hull to deck joints extend down the transom below the swimstep. There have been more than a couple instances of leaks at the bottom of the swimstep when the joint gets pushed under the water surface under power. Just a thought, Trevor
