I just replaced my water heater with a new Seaward 6 gallon heater. The heater has a heat exchanger system and I was wondering how long it take to get hot water when running the engine? So far, 1/2 hour of running at 5.5 knots has not produced hot water.

Hot Water

James: Remember that you are running a very efficient engine. It takes a while to warm the engine to operating temperature before the coolant even starts to circulate through the water-heater coils. From a cold start, the water in the water-heater also helps to cool the engine coolant. If you are only running the engine so you can take a hot shower, enjoy a few more miles of motoring. It's also nice for dish washing after a great meal. With lackluster--at best--winds here in the Midwest, we get to do a great deal of motoring, and the water is always hot when we reach the anchorage. Good luck. You're gonna love it. James, How did you get the old one out?

I am going to have to replace mine (it is bypassed) and it looks like a bear to get it out (my cat 30 is a 1988, with the hot water heater under the aft berth, foward of the fuel tank. H.

Harry, water heater location

Harry, I have a 1984 Cat 30 and the heater is located in the port lazette (sp?). The 6 gallon heater just fits through the hatch but sits nicely on the ledge. The exchange hoses are lead behind the galley draws and holes are cut through to the lazette. Maybe you could move your to this location?

Cooling system petcock

Make sure all the air is bled out of the closed cooling system which feeds the heat exchanger. My new at the time 270 would not heat the water until i bled the system, now it heats the water just fine. The petcock is probably the high point on the intake hose somewhere.
