SeaWard 6 Gallon StainlessSteel Hot Water Heater

My Seaward heater has developed leak at heat exchanger intake and and outlet of the Water Heater . The leak occurs between the plastic tube and the Stainless Casing! It not leaking at the connection of hose!It appears to be clear water...not anti-freeze!Has anyone had this happen to them? Is there any fix orshould I just buy a replacement Hot Water Heater!

You could try a high temp automotive epoxy. Otherwise.....replace. The cheapest price I found for a replacement was at Sailnet.com. However, their stock has been backordered forever. I ordered in mid May and I am still waiting. Sailnet says Seaward underestimated demand this year and has been scrambling to catch-up....for whatever that is worth. On the other hand I saw a SS 6 gal Seaward on the shelf at BoatUS. But they want over $200 for it, so I will wait.

BoatU. S. states all Seaward Water Heaters have aluminum inner tanks. Other than appearence why spend extra for stainless exterior?

Because aluminum corrodes in salt air

The case on a water heater can't be anything BUT stainless or polymer.However, fwiw, I don't like aluminum inner tanks. Water heaters with glass tanks have a replaceable anode...an inexpensive part that takes all of 10 minutes to replace. When the anodizing on an aluminum inner tank fails, the entire water heater has to be replaced.

Replaced My Hot Water Tank

The hot water tank on my 30T (1991) developed a fresh water leak that sounds similar to yours. I replaced tank with the identical Seaward S700. When I took the old tank apart to see what had happened I found considerable rust on the bottom base panel and the water was leaking from the heat exchanger tube where it exited the tank. When you remove the heat exchanger connections be prepared to catch the coolant that remains in the hoses. Also drain water from the tank through the drain valve to lighten it. It will be necessary to remove the dinette seat covering the tank but this is easy. All in all the tank replacement is quite simple so go for it.

for what it's worth. Who really cares how much longer a water heater is going to last. For $200-250 the Seaward heaters are just fine. They last from 10-15 yrs. They come in galvanized or stainless exteriors (about $30 extra for the S.S.).Yes you can go out and spend another $100 plus and more and maybe get better quality but are they going to last any longer?
