Anyone care to recommend a surveyor for a 1978 34ft sailboat?

The Boat Show, happening soon, might be a good place to look. I used to know a top rated surveyor who always had a little booth there, altho he is now retired. Ask around on your YC web site, also.

Here is a listing of Accredited Marine Surveyor's

Perhaps finding one near you, then asking in the marina about any experiences will help.

I did my own on my 1974 35ft boat. I knew enough about the basics and the boat value was such that I knew it would be a project boat. If you are spending big money then get a professional to help.

Focus on the key issues.
  • Sound hull. No leaks KEEP THE WATER OUT.
  • No wet decks Nothing but a pain to repair.
  • Equipment works No rust or corrosion.
  • Budget for repairs and replacements. Sail boats are sail powered. Mast and sails need to be refit and replaced.
  • Get a mechanic to inspect the engine.
  • Cross fingers.

Hired Global Marine Surveyors, Inc. at 425/397-6601 to do both of our boats and was very satisfied with their job. Very professional.

2 surveyors in particular for the Seattle area above all others are John Sanford: (425) 941-6354, and Garrett Polehonka, 360 970 6412. You can't go wrong with either one. I've used both.
