I have to upgrade to the RAYM SPX-5 SMARTPILOT WHEEL since Raymarine will does not support the ST 4000 any more. Anyone did this job? Anything to look out for?

I was using the Smart Heading Gyro 2 unit before looks like that comes out and the new LARGE SPX-5 Smart unit goes in. Do I have that right?

Thanks in advance Jim

Just a few comment as I was looking for something similar before eventually installing a below deck unit:
- in the past the wheelpilot consisted of a drive unit (the wheeldrive) and a control unit that included all the "brains". Ah, the rudder position as well but this is an additional feature let's say and you can have it with any wheeldrive, both new and old. Nowadays, a wheelpilot consists again of the drive unit, a new control unit (ST6002) that doesn't have brains any longer and a course computer (SPX5).
- whatever wheeldrive unit you currently have (black raython or the S1 grey unit) you can simply change that if your problem lies there (I mean with the drive rather than the electronics). Both are supposed to do the same job but I think the grey unit is a bit more robust than the old black unit.
- if you update to a completely new SPX5 you will of course need to change the control unit. Keep your old drive unit as a back up as you could still use it with the new unit.

PS: What is a "smart heading gyro 2 unit" that you have anyway? Is it a course computer or the new style control units? Are you sure it's a seatalk problem that you have and not trying to connect a new control unit directly with the drive unit?

My ST-4000 control head died last fall so I replaced the unit with the X-5 this spring. Because of its location, I left the old compass in place. All the new parts fit the same holes as the old ones. You do need to find a dry spot for the added computer - on my H306, it fit on the inner forward surface of the wheel console. I mounted the transmitter for the remote there as well. That location made the NMEA interface to the chartplotter a breeze.

Clipper 361 please see the link to the Smart Heading Gyro Unit spec below. I believe is a gyro with NEMA and Seatalk output to send info to the radar unit. The new X-5 computer unit has these function built in but it does seem as nice. The X-5 doesn't have the LEDs that show the unit is functioning correctly.

I considered upgrading to a below deck unit too but the price and installation requirements out weight the benefits.
