The current owner has reached his personal stopping point and is walking away. Over 55% of the hard part is done and there are no secrets left hidden. We have thirty days to line up a new owner or find funds for her storage. After that, she'll meet her original fate.

Charlie, How much invested at this stage and how much to go? From a purely monetary point of view how much will this boat cost when it is complete? From what I have seen of your work when you say "Finished" we are looking at a boat that is as good or better than new. Could anyone purchase a new boat equal to Seasmoke for the same dollars?

The current owner has 42K in the boait. He's signing her back over and walking away. Realistically, there's 60K worth left before she's completely finished, including new interior, electrical and spade rudder. A new boat built to her specs and materials (if you can find the wood) would run 450K and have no history or intrinsic value. If someone went back with the original interior we removed, kept the still good 75HP engine, we could get her done for around 45K. At this point, I would sign the boat over for one dollar with a confirmed restoration contract.

You have been paid for labor and material up to this stage? Being able to get an essentially new boat this size and quality for this price should attract many interested boaters that have a fondness for fine wooden yachts with an interesting pedigree.
What will her tankage be when she is finished?

Yes, we have been paid. The tankage is K-40 standard as they are centerline bilge mounted tanks. 35 and 25 IIRC.

Has an outside color scheme been established and I presume that the inside could be customized for an owner. Are the sails and running rigging in usable condition?

I have a set of decent used sails I got from Lady J. We were thinking an LPU in Cream for the hull, which would compliment the varnished brightwork. The interior could go back or be built custom. She's pretty much an open slate, excepting the head and bulkheads.

Charlie, What is the displacement of Seasmoke in a sail away trim?

Seasmoke is not extraordinarily heavy for a forty foot boat. Does she have much storage space below the waterline?

For those of you late to the discussion, Seasmoke was originally commissioned, raced, and sailed by James (Aurness) Arness. Yes, "Marshal Matt Dillon", Norwegian-American sailor, and actor of some repute.

The storage is reasonable for a narrow boat but most of it is aft in that long laz.

One of the reasons James loved the Kettenburgs because they were the only boats he could stand up straight in. Marshall Dillon was a very good sailor and won many a prestigious race, including the 1,000 mile long Newport to Mazatlan aboard Seasmoke.

In 1959, the K-40 was introduced. Again, Paul Kettenburg and Charlie
Underwood teamed up together. Paul created the hull and sailspin, and Charlie
attended to what Paul refers to as “aesthetics.” The K-40, Paul says, is a
“beamed out” K-38. It was a racer and a winner along with the K-38. The K-40
won the Newport-Ensenada race in a field of 500 contestants. Because they won
so many races, and were so fast, Humphrey Bogart, one of the competitors, and
also known for his acting, said, “It was unfair because the best boat was too fast!”

From the time the Kettenburg’s started making the K-40’s, they had built,
in approximately seven years, forty boats.
In 1948, the Kettenburg’s set a record that the boat-building business had
never made. At one time, Kettenburg Marine, hauled more boats to be repaired
than any other boat yard in the United States—over 3,000 boats per year.

Rather surprizing that no one has copied the boat in fiberglass. There is a constant quest for fast sailboats. I wonder how a modernized Kettleburg would do in an open ocean race against some of the modern GRP designs.

She has been on the hard for many years and has been in Charlie's shop for most of the summer. He states early on that she still needs a rudder. This has been a total refit of an historically significant boat. If I were younger and wealthier I would move on it in a heartbeat.

I'm with Ross on this

Only two things that are keeping me away from this. My excess years, and lack of funds.

What state is she located in?
Since Charlie Cobra has possession and his address is Bellingham, in Washington on the northwest pacific coast of the USA I think that you could find it there.
