Hello!

I have found a nice piece of equipment for my Vega and would like to
know if anyone had any experience or has heard of it.
It is called seaPC (www.seapc.se).
I saw boat PCs before but they are not so good looking.

Thank you for any advise

A cheap notebook is a lot easier and cheaper. Tried PCs etc on teh boat and
still find the Notebook the easiest with a suitable Chart Software (SeaPro
etc)

Thank you Steve.
The problem I had with the notebook is that one needs to operate with the
keyboard, and, at least from what I experienced, they tend to get damaged.
Is there a model you recommend ?
I saw a nice entoughened notebook from Panasonic but it costs much more than
the SeaPC.

I checked the web site you posted. I could not find any specs or other info
that explains why/how this unit is suited to Marine use. The biggest
concerns I would have is moist salty air ruining it's innards, the
brightness and contrast ratios of the display and current draw. I met a
Vega owner this summer that told me his 17" notebook draws more power than
his fridge (ouch).

Too little info on their site:

What is the cost? What is the current draw? Can you buy a high end notebook
for less?

I researched marine computers this spring and ended up with a smallish
notebook (Toshiba M300).

Hi All,

I own a Computer Resale business out of Houston, TX.
I sent an email regarding the specs and info on the
SeaPC and will update everyone when I get that
information. From the info available on their
website,
it looks like it would be a very convenient system for
our boats.

Hello!
I sent a mail to SeaPC asking about price and where to buy. They are
introducing
SeaPC to the market in these days. Therefor you have to order directly
from Sweden.
They dont have any resellers yet.

The basic system includes:
40 GB HD, (80 will be available later). CD/DVD, speakers and RS232 conv.
(To connect GPS or other stuff using NMEA-standards).

Software:
Windows XP, one Touck application selector, bow camera application,
CD/MP3 and DVD-player. GPS software.

The price is 21.200 swedish kroner. app. USD 2.600,-

It seems you have to buy the TV-card separatly.

Regards to all Vega-sailors!!

Hi All

I still think a notebook does the job as well, cheap secondhand, throw away
when it dies. All IMHO

agree for most cases. notebooks are cheaper, optimized for low power consumption and easier to service/swap because they are often backed up by an international service organization or dealer network. downside is that they are more prone to seawater and more fragile in general. if you do a lot of off shore cruising and need ultimate reliability then a SeaPc may be the better choice.
