I am getting ready to seal the windows on our 1986 h23 and was looking in the archives and it seems most have used RTV sealant. Is this the same as Silicone? I was thinking of using black silicone and sealing them with that? Any thoughts would be great. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria

No on silicon as it will break down too easily. Use Dow Corning black #795. TO locate the closest buisness that sells it, call 800-248-2481 which is Dow Corning. This is the good stuff. You can spread it with the finger using alcohol or just plain spit. Keep finger clean or wiped off all the time. Clean as quickly or you will have a bugger of a time to get it off

Alternative
If all you want to do is keep out water, I'd recommend LifeSeal caulk. Get the clear tube. Cut a narrow nozzle hole and apply in the crack. Use your pinky to achieve the smallest possible bead and follow with acetone to clean up. I did this with my rubrail and and it worked great. Clear is less visable.

If you want a good seal,
do not just dab a new bead of silicon onto the old sealant around the port. You should remove the ports entirely and very carefully clean and degrease the mounting surfaces. Use the Dow 795 or whatever Hunter recommends for your boat. You could probably get some good advice by calling their 800 number.

for the suggestions. The glass shop we use has the Dow 795 and I am getting a tube today. Launch day has been moved back do to no water. Now have to decide where to take it. neoprene glazing tape
I need to do this also, these windows leak like sieves...has anyone experimented with neoprene glazing tape like what is used on residential skylights? It typically lasts 10 yrs. Sure seems like it would be easier than dealing with goo and trying not to squeeze it all out when your screwing the window back on...

Steve I wonder if that would work. We are a contractor and have used that and was thinking about trying it here. It seems like it would work. I did buy some window sealant but haven't put it on yet. If you try it let me know. I still have a couple other projects to finish before I get to that. I am in the middle of replacing the stripes and logo and finishing the woodwork down below. Rob Morton

I used black RTV a few years back
It has held-up well with zero leaks. The PO of my boat must have got a sale on clear silicon because the stuff was EVERYWHERE and quite sloppily done. Note the chainplate in the pic. It still looks "ruberized" so i'm not done yet! Took me a day each to redo the windows. One suggestion... Before you put the sealant on them to put them back in. run a perimeter of masking tape about 1/4" outside the area of the window. That way when you fair in the sealant you will have a nice even line all the way around. Its allot easier to keep it off where you don't want it than to try to neatly and evenly remove excess later.
