Sealing the toe rail

I have a 1979 Hunter 33 that I am renovating and bring back to life. First question: The toe rail was leaking on both the port and starboard sides. When toe rail removed there was a putty type sealant used by the factory to originally seal the deck-to-hull joint and toe rail bolts all at the same time. Anyone know what this putty type sealant was? It is grey in color. Also, any recommendations what to reseal the toe rail with? Second question: The toe rail is black anodized aluminum. Any recommendations on how to bring the shine/life back to the finish?

Life Seal, clear

It would be ideal to remove the toe rail and clean all sides well before replanting. Regardless, do the best you can and use the clear version of LifeSeal to caulk the rail between or at the deck. This is where most of your leaks are coming from.

toe rail sealant

I believe the OME sealant was dow-corning 795. This is good stuff (an isopropanal cured silicon) still available from hunter marint. But if you have not yet removed the toes, I would crank down on the bolts, and see if that doesn't get it done. Hope this helps, regards, Jim.

Rope Caulk

I have an 1988 Legend35. My toe-rail has a caulk bedding which appears to be like Modeling Clay. The Product I found is put out by "Frost King". Its Ribbon Caulk measuring 3/16" in diameter and 90'long. It cost less than $6 a box. I used it to bed my port and starboard skylight windows 3 years ago. Then I used the Dow Chemical Lexan Sealer for the top Bead. Skylights have not leaked since. The Rope Caulk is easy to work with and can be easily cut or molded.
