Hunter 23 WIll be at a Navy base
I am getting ready to run my main halyard to the cockpit on a Hunter 23 the line is long enough and I have all the parts. I have a 2 line turning block Schafer and a 2 line spinlock rope clutch. I read about what to use to seal the equipment, of course i failed to write it down. I do know when I drill the holes to be careful of the ceiling material so I do not rip it off the ceiling. I also read to ream the holes out and put epoxy in the holes so it seals the core. I need to tape the underneath before I poor the epoxy. WHat I do not know is what kind of epoxy. Once that is done I redrill and set the fitting. What I do not know again is what to use under the fitting 4200 or something else. I have a role of butyl caulk but not sure that will work. If that does work, do I need something else also?

Butyl tape worked great on my chain plates. I would think it would work fine there.

Some swear by tpe but others do not. Some use 4200 which is good above deck and so is the white silicon from west marine which is acutally made by Silaflex, good company. I have used the 4200 and white silicon from west marine for years with success. The key is liberally over caulk and let it ooze out. Let it stand momentarily and then bolt down the fittings to include the threads on the bolts as well and then clean up the caulk with either acetone or alcohol on fiberglass. I prefer alcohol if in the event that you are ever near plastics, lexan and so forth as it will harm it. Let it dry completly before disturbing the fittings. The key is to overcaulk as many undercaulk and have leaks.

I would also go with the butyl. Just used it for the same purpose. If I do not use butyl then I normally opt for Life Caulk.

Steve;

The butly tape is fine for some purposes but over time I have seen it fail sooner than other. However, some put it in badly but for you, you know what you are doing and thank you for supporting this forum with your kind and good suggestions as always.

I am boatless now after paying off 1.5 million in debt when I had to close the buisness down thanks to the economy leaving me with hardly anything but I am old school and I am proud for going that route vs. bankruptcy.

This may help:

Bedding Deck Hardware With Bed-It Butyl Tape

Sealing Deck penetrations To Prevent Core Rot

It is all in HOW you install it. Our own boat was bedded with a quality butyl, including chain plates, hull deck joint, bow stem, transom chain plate, and all deck hardware 33 years ago and over 80% of the deck hardware has still never been re-bedded. When I pulled the chain plates at year 32 all six were still BONE DRY.... It has been, by a long shot, the absolute driest leak free vessel we have ever owned and we've owned 3 Catalina's a Cape Dory and numerous other boats all bedded with "marine sealants" and all of them leaked. Heck our brand new, not a used boat but brand new, Catalina had leaking deck hardware two months after taking delivery....:doh:
