I am installing a louvered teak insert in the companionway.

Is 3M sealant or butyl tape the best way to seal the insert?

Not sure which 3M sealant you mean, but it's hard to go wrong with butyl on anything above the waterline.

3 choices in my book, 1 butyl 2 butly or 3 butyl

Is it secured by fasteners? Required by butyl.
Will you ever remove it?
And yes, 3M makes a LOT of products.

I like butyl, but I use many different products. Just depends on what I need.

If this is a louvered teak insert why would you worry about sealing it? If water gets into the boat wouldn't it get in through the louvers, rather than around the insert? Am I missing something here? I'd suggest plain old bedding compound, if you absolutely needed something. Easier to work with and easier to clean up.
