Going to replace a horn cleat used for the jib furling line on a '87 Hunter 28.5. The cleat is thru-bolted so it doesn't need much adhesion (eg 5200) but I'd like suggestions for a good sealant to use between the cleat and deck to prevent water leaks thru bolt holes.

Thanx

If you don't want to use butyl tape after reading these articles DON'T use 5200. Maybe use 4200, or better, 3M 4000 or Boatlife Lifecaulk, following MaineSail's techniques of properly potting for core protection and countersinking the holes for greater fastener to sealant contact area.

Use butyl tape. Easy to work with and it lasts. While you;re at it, order a roll from Mainesail.

Dont order from Mainsail just cause he's here helpin out.

Order from Mainsail because he did the testing to fit the application and manufactures a GREAT butyl, to his specs, and sells that..

I have some of what I thought was good butyl tape. But after 5 years it is drying out. The good stuff that mainsail is selling is significantly different than the first stuff I bought.

I keep a small tube of polysulfide sealant in my boat box, just for this type of chore. I use Boat Life's "Life Caulk"

Be sure to countersink your holes. It will not only add area for the sealant to grip it helps prevent gell coat cracks from starting.
