Are these opening ports or fixed ports/windows? For the fixed windows I used Dow 795. It is designed for
extreme temperature ranges. Pat

Pat,

I know that Rudy recommends Dow 795 Sealant.

However, 795 is a silicone based sealant. There is fundamental issue with any silicone based sealants and fiberglass. Once you use any silicone sealant on fiberglass there is permanent silicone residue in the gel coat or fiberglass.

If you ever have to reseal that residue impeds any new seal even if the new sealant is silicone based. Most experienced auto body men know of this issue. Many boat owners find out about.

Single part urethene sealants without silicone will get around this problem except when used after any sealant containg silicone is used.

The only know way to get a new seal once a silicone sealant is used is to grind off the surface and create a new surface.

NP 1 is such single part urethene sealant. There are others.

Sometimes a butyl based sealant works when a silicone sealant has been used before.

The issue is a chemical mingling issue. This is why some of us have problems rebeding things.

Just thoughts about continued discussion. I know many on this forum swear by 795. I did not know of this issue until about 3 years ago when I had some rebedding issues and asked around.

Re: sealants

That's good to know Ed. I'll have to remember that. I've found that the black DC 795 can be pretty messy to clean up if it gets into surrounding fiberglass surfaces by accident.
