Sealant for replacing handrails and such

I will be removing the handrails and other wood trim for refinishing. When I put them back on, what kind of sealant do I place between the boat and the wood to keep the holes from leaking into the cabin?

On wood, need to seal it first using varnish or 3M primer.

Watch out for permanent sealant.When 3M says its permanent it is! you'll not be taking the sealed peice off without some of the boat comming with it.Campy
