Sealand hose install techniques

I just replaced my holding tank and thought it would be a good time to replace the sanitation hose as well. I bought the Sealand Odorsafe hose and couldn't get it on-too stiff too tight. I read your comments about ky Jelly, which my wife and I tried out, but didn't help much as far as the sanitation hose goes. I heard some helpfull hintsfrom my slip neighbors that a torch would heat up the hose and it would go on- not real happy with the fire hazard, I do have a heat gun but will use a torch if that's what it takes. Thanks in advance.

Hair Dryer

A hair dryer worked very well. I made sure I heated the ID and OD of the hose as well as lubricate it. Good Winds, Dave s/v DAMWEGAS

Don't use heat. The real problem is the fittings...

You cannot use the gray PVC thread-barb fittings because (for reasons I've never uncovered) nominal 1.5" thread x 1.5" barbed is actual 1.5" thread x 1 5/8" barbed. If you try to heat the hose enough to get it onto the fitting, you'll damage the hose. Hose should never be heated to make it bend tighter than it wants to go either...that weakens the hose, which can cause it to collapse and kink in the bend and even tear. Use inline radius fittings instead SeaLand has fittings that 1.5" hose--including OdorSafe--will slip onto easily with lubrication and minimal warming. Call 'em at 800-321-9886. Standards call for double clamps on all sanitation hose connections...it's absolutely essential that double clamps be used with the SeaLand fittings. Screw should be on opposing sides of the hose.

Soft hose

I replaced everything two years ago. After fighting with some of it, someone said to heat the hose in boiling water. The hose gets soft and slides right on.

Heat it!

I cannot agree with Peggy on this one. Not even a 1000W hair dryer would work. I borrowed a heat gun and worked very carefully. Slips right on when done right. It has nothing to do with "gray" fittings. The Sealand hose would not go on the Raritan head fitting, it would not go on the bronze vented-loop fitting, it would not go on the other Marelon vented-loop, and it would not go on the Ronco tank fittings. Heat it up! But not with a torch. :)

Hair dryer and K-Y

I just replace mine and found the hair dryer k-y route was the only way I could put the hose on the SeaLane fittings (or anything else for that matter) Slip a 90 degree elbow on the other end and use it for leverage, lots of pushing and turning will get the job done. My brother in law, recently retired as a maintenance foreman from GM, could force them on without lubricant or heat. Russell

Warming a hose and heating it aren't same thing

All hose needs to be warmed a little to soften it enough to get it onto a fitting--but only in boiling water or with a blow dryer, never with a heat gun or a torch.

Peggy's Right........ As Usual!

Just finished replacing the hose on my third boat, and absolutely agree that if you use boiling water the hose will slide right on. And the water is the lube, so you don't need any kind of "jelly". Preserves or jam, maybe.... Michael O'

Russell, send brother in law

I imagine if he can shove the hose on with out any other help he would not fit in the lazarette. I actually tried to work head down in there and got caught and couldn't get out. My buddy came running over from the next slip and pulled me out-there was some 'plumber's crack' involved, if you catch my drift. I also want to thank everyone for the info, I'm gonna try to finish this project next weekend in time to anchor out and enjoy the fireworks. The old tank(aluminum) had a 1/2" hole in the bottom! I just bought the boat last fall from the widow of a friend that passed away suddenly last year and I always thought he had a "Stinker"....

Boiling water is the best

A pot of boiled water is the best way to soften up a hose end. Works every time.
