Does anyone know of a product to seal an original deck on 1978 sailboat? The gelcoat is old, no longer shines, and picks up quite a bit of dirt over the winter. The dirt requires quite a bit of scrubbing to get it off. It would be great to find something that seals the micropours without making the deck feel slippery (friend used a teflon-based product and shoes slide easily).

Hey Pitman. I'm about to order some Sure Step for our boat.
Does that product produce any shine for the smooth sections of the deck? I'd like to use one product for the whole area above the rub rail and there are sections that are smooth; cabin sides, cockpit seat sides, etc. and wondered if the Sure Step might give a nice luster to those areas. TIA

Sand and paint
An option that you may explore is remove the hardware and fixtures from the deck, repair any soft spots in the balsa core deck, repair cracks, fills nicks in the surface, sand the deck smooth, prime the deck, paint the decks, paint a nonskid texture on the deck, and reinstall the hardware and fixtures. We used Interlux Primecoat, Interlux BrightSide, and Interlux BrightSide w/ nonskid compound and flattening agent. The new Interlux Paints would fill the pores, shine and will repel dirt and the elements.

Thanks for the responses. I know that those deck paints work wonders. I'm just not ready to go there. I can also tell you there is no way in hell I am going to wax that thing more than once. The Vertglas looks interesting - anyone else tried it? Island Girl is interesting and easily purchased. Did I mention that the gelcoat is *very* old. I can't imagine it ever shining again. I just want it to seal so it will be easier to wash.

Woody Wax
Get yourself some 'Woody Wax' and try that first. Made for non-skid but works great old decks. Should be able to find at WM.
