"Seacocks" revisited, etc.

As I posted earlier, I have changed out the "seacocks" (ball valves on pipes) on my '79 C30 TRBS. I did the 1/2" galley sea water valve first since it was easier to get to. A few days ago I changed out the 3/4" galley/head sink drain valve. I cut out an opening in front of the valve below the galley cabinet and next to the existing engine access door. I am going to cover over the new opening and existing opening with a single 28" x 12" door. I figure I will just remove the entire door and frame when working on the engine. The 3/4" valve was harder to break loose but the pipe was solid as a rock. I replaced the old tee and brass nipple as well as the clamps. Interesting to note that both clamps were badly rusted, especially at the screw. On one clamp the slot was fully rusted and a screwdriver wouldn't work, so while wrenching it with only a light twist, the clamp broke and fell right off ! It was definitely time to change this stuff! There was some water to deal with but nothing scary. Once I knew the pipe was in to stay it was a breeze. I would suggest to anyone replacing this valve to make the cutout as I did. Sure made access easy. I will probably remove the valve/pipe arrangement and replace them with true through-hulls next haul-out, which will be at least a year away. But for now, since I have so much other "fun stuff" to do, this will take care of the situation. By the way, I changed out the little sliding window in the head with a lewmar hatch similar to what they use on the new boats. Took only a little reshaping of the existing hole with a jig saw to install. It looks great, doesn't leak and gives great ventilation. I am going to replace the smaller fixed window across from the head on the starboard side, too. I talked to David Graas at Catalina regarding the lifting bulkheads and he faxed me a drawing regarding how to place the bulkeads in their proper position and bolt them down. This is a project I want to get done before too far into summer. I have been taking tons pictures and will have a web site up and running one of these days. When I do I will share the befores and afters as I get this '79 C30 in great shape. I have learned a lot from this forum and appreciate you all. Hope I can help as well and save someone some unnecessary time and money, too. Chris

Port in the Head

Chris, what size Lewmar port did you get for the head and opposite starboard side. In addition, where did you find it.

Opening port

Ray, If I remember correctly it was a 4x14. I purchased it from West Marine. I'll see if I can find the receipt and give you the part#. They had it in stock at their warehouse and delivered it to the store near my marina in 2 days. $212.50 plus tax. OUCH. email me at ch2chris@pacbell.net and I'll send you a picture of it installed. By the way. I have read dozens of posts about how to install these windows and what to use for caulking. I used butyl tape (putty tape) only. Works great, easy to install, not messy. Chris

port is 6x16

Ray, The West Marine receipt shows the opening port as 6x16, smoked window, part# 329334. $214.99 Guess my memory wasn't as good as I thought! Chris
