Besides my plumbing post questions a more urgent matter is replacing my existing gate valve shutoff in the galley sink through hull. I do not want to replace the whole through hull, (maybe ill tackle that next year), but would like to replace the gate valve with a ball valve shutoff. Has anybody else done this on there oday 25 or similar. Is it as simple as twisting off the existing gate valve shutoff and then twisting on the new ball valve shutoff??? Would you recommend the metal ones or the marine plastic ones???

That's pretty much the procedure, but you'll want to hold back on the thru hull to keep it from turning. You can do this from the outside of the hull by inserting a tool to catch the small tits on the inside. There's a special tool made for this or you can maybe use a proper sized square shafted screwdriver or the handle of 9" channellock pliers- be sure you have good contact. I would remove the thru hull and reseat it because it might shift during this process.
The body of the thru hull is all male threads and because of this the threads aren't tapered and you'll only have maybe two threads screwed into the female threads of the valve. You can improve on the thread seal by using a pipe cutting die on the male end of the thru hull and get a couple of more threads to screw into the valve.
