My 1984 Catalina 27 does not have a sea water strainer as fitted.... I am thinking of doing. Is that the same for all? Any comments or thoughts on this would be appreciated....

I too want to know, as I am on a zebra-mussel infested lake. I will be changing out my non-cleanable clamshell raw-water intake for one that can be more easily cleaned of the offending critters. Probably just a simple mushroom thru-hull on a flanged seacock.
I will need the second line of defense that a strainer will provide. Definitely interested in learning more about and getting recommendations for a good strainer.

Vetus makes a nice small plastic one that I mounted on the stb. Side of the engine room. It is high up and forward so you can easily pour antifreeze in it and is at or just above the waterline. I also increased the hose size to 3/4 inch from the 1/2" hose that went into the engine.
So far, it works like a champ. It took about an hour to install. I will look up the model number and post it.
