Sea water filling holding tank

I own a 2000 Hunter 420. Recently the rear holding tank guage has show full when it should not be full. The tank is under the read cabin’s bed and I believe below the water line. Thus. I am guessing there is some sea water leak into the tank. And while I can empty it w/ the mascerator, it refills. I suspect a leak but have yet had it checked on the hard. Any ideas or similar experiences? Any suggestions appreciated.

Normally the recommendation for leaks is to first determine if it is salt or fresh by TASTING it….. yeeeet:yikes:

Turn off the through hulls. Then open one at a time.

Your thru hull Sea Cock, on the macerator discharge, is leaking back on you

We used that technique to back flow sea water and pump out again, washing out our Hold Tank.

Good suggestion, Joe. The most likely source of the water that's filling up the tank is the macerator discharge thru-hull. It should always be kept closed except when actually dumping the tank. The macerator will only slow down water outside the boat that's seeking it's own level INside the boat via any open thru-hull. You've been using the macerator pump to empty the tank...I'm betting that you haven't been closing the seacock on that that thru-hull each time. If you have, the seacock isn't working.

If you have a ball valve atop the thru-hull, the mechanism between the handle and the ball can corrode through. You can turn the handle but the ball inside does not turn. So the valve remains open if open, or closed if closed, etc.
