Hooray, the engine work is done. We get to sea trial the new to us Catalina 380 that we put a deposit down on Feb. 22. Hopefully we will close sometime next week and then it's a matter of sailing it back home to San Pedro where the new slip awaits. I plan on giving the engine a good work out and a careful check for leaks and such. The surveyor had a question about the dripless shaft seal saying that he didn't know the age so we 'might' want to replace it. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated. It didn't look bad at all to my trained eyes. The other items were some fresh water leaks and a macerator pump that didn't seem to work. Closer inspection showed wire nuts on the connections so that is the first place I'll check but I did get a new macerator just in case on close out at West Marine. Wish us luck!

Congratulations.

Quick tip, take the purchase agreement etc. to West Marine for the new boat owner's discount and get all you need while you get the discount.

Thanks Obsession. I already talked to the broker about the one time courtesy use of the discount card. We have been working on the list for some time now. Divided it into "must have now" "better now than later" and "would be really nice if it's priced right"

Congratulations on your new boat.

I hope you are aware of the Catalina owners associations, almost all of which have their own websites.

In addition, our C34IA website has a trove of valuable information about boat systems, most of which are identical to yours. Feel free to Noodle around at www.c34ia.org.

What engine does your boat have? This site has a ton of Yanmar information, and ours has lots of Universal engine info.

Have fun on your trip home.

Thanks Stu. I have perused the c34 site many times. I have been a member of the Catalina 30 owner association for many years. My engine is a Westerbeke 42B. The exhaust manifold was corroded so badly that the fresh water cooling system wouldn't hold pressure. The dealer had to order one and have it made to order. It took 5 weeks. That is why the delay to finish the sea trial.

Some Westerbeke 42's in some models of Catalina had problems with excessive back pressure in the exhaust causing the engine to fail prematurely. I think one way to diagnose this problem is with a non-contact thermometer since the last one or two cylinders run hotter than the front ones if the problem is occurring.
