We went out this Sunday and made it 1/4 mile from marina before the cooling water temp lite came on. Let it cool down ad made it safely back to the marina. I need some help in trying to pinpoint the problem(s). I do not know where the sea strainer is located to check if it needs cleaning or the mixing Y either. The manuals I have are of little help.

Try this

Lift up the board covering the drive shaft. Look for a yellow lever for raw water intake. Turn it downward, parallel to the bottom The sea strainer is a bronze capped jar nearby. Undo the top and pull out the strainer to clean. When recapped, be sure to pull up yellow lever. If it leaks, try again to reseat the cap.

check the whole system

Start exactly there: at the point the water comes into the boat. Be careful while taking the strainer assembly apart, as the brass is not easy to work with. Just go slow and you will be ok. check the hose itself. On our Yanmar 2GM20F, the hose snakes around the engine and to the inlet on the raw water pump. Verify that the 'fanbelt' driving the pump is tight. Check that pump as well. Yanmar has an excellent site for all of their engines. Or buy the book. It may be time to trace the whole cooling system, including the dastardly Mixing U. joe

Fouled Water Intake

Hi George, I found my water intake fouled with mussels. Cleared by removing intake hose and used a screw driver to clear (cruising and a long way from port). During spring prep next year, put masking tape over the inlet and filled with bottom paint to coat the sufaces up to the hose. Immediately removed the tape and let the excess paint drain into a paint can. I use ablative paint and lasts several years. Good Luck, Bob

Me too

First shut your seacock. They open your strainer. Then open your seacock and see if water is coming out. If not you have found your problem. It is in the hose of the seacock. Good Luck!

On my 28.5

The raw water strainer is under the berth in the aft cabin. I would imagine your is in the same place. It should be in the same area that access the trasmission of your engine. Be sure to check the O-rings. If they are old and worn they could be letting air bubbles in to your system which can cause your engine to run hot. Also check your raw water impeller.

Sea Strainer

George, I know just how you feel, My wife and I just had the same problem,,,We motoered out for the day..sailed around the bay, found a little anchorage and had lunch after we were heading back in..the water temp climbed real quick.....we ended up sailing almost into our dock...not a little feet with a 46' sailboat. it was our sea strainer...after a conversation and a demowith our mechanic I now know how to clean and inspect..this boat was new to us at the time...We had sucked in some sea grass...and at this time of the year the Chesapeake bay water is VERY murky so I couldnt see through our glass cage to see if it was clogged.....cleaned it out and she runs like a charm... Good luck and happy sailing.! We are off for a 2 week sail in 17 days!!! Rob

Raw water intake strainer

Your strainer should be located between the engine raw water intake and the engine. With the engine shut down, close the seacock and take the top off the strainer and clean it out. Reassemble the strainer. Open the engine raw water seacock and restart the engine.

One more thing . .

The top of the strainer on my 30T is held on by two wing nuts and washers under the nuts. The first time I removed the top I lost one of the washers (they are dark brown and the whole area is pretty dark). I tried screwing the top back down without the washer and the top leaked. Luckily I had another washer on the boat that worked. Point being, be careful when you remove the wing nuts and the top. If you lose a washer, you may have a leak. Carl
