Sea sick kids

My kids (five and seven years old) love going out on their uncle's or their Grandpa's powerboat, but they tend to get seasick on my sailboat. Needless to say, this makes for short and unhappy sailing days. Does anyone know of a kiddie version of dramamine or bonine or something like that? It's gotten to the point where they don't want to come out with me. I've been seasick and I don't blame them, but I don't want them to miss out if there's help available.

seasick

Ginger in most any form works for my kids. (Candied ginger, fresh ginger - pretty strong taste, ginger ale, etc)

Cherry Lifesavers

I've heard this from guys at NASA but no one I have found knows why it works.

Have you tried any of the wristband products?

Mike: Have you tried any of the wrist bands like the ones from Davis. You just put them on their wrists with a little gel and they are suppose to work. If that does not work you may try the active bands (ReliefBands). For the kids (being one myself for 53 years), I would recommend that you try to stay away from the oral medications if possible. There are ginger therapies that may help too. I actually tried the ReliefBands on the way home from Hawaii last summer and (I think) they worked. They have a throwaway model and a permanent model (replaceable batteries). It would be worth the try. If you purchase them from someone like West Marine, you should be able to return them if they do not work. Check out this site. (http://www.geocities.com/freighterman.geo/seasickness.html) You really need to get this taken care of soon or the kids will never want to go aboard a boat again.

I have seen REAL Ginger beer work wonders on all

sorts of people (No.....it is not alchoholic). Regular Ginger ale will not work very well because it doesn't really have any real ginger in it. One source for ginger beer ---- http://www.reedsgingerbrew.com/ But there are all sorts of places and brands out there in natural food stores/ health stores and Jamaican grocery stores One should get the EXTRA Ginger brew ---its the one that has more ginger and only one called ginger BEER....

Keep 'em busy

The best way to prevent seasickness is to stay busy. Of course once it sets in, it's a bear to get rid of. If they're old enough to haul sheets, etc. keep 'em busy by tacking a lot. Or have them identify sea life, etc. Ginger is a natural remedy. Sometimes sucking on cherry/lemon/whatever lifesavers/drops is effective. Keep an eye on the horizon. Go fast & heel as much as possible! That's probably why they like the powerboat!! :) LaDonna

Jamaican ginger beer

Look for "D&G" brand ginger beer. It comes in brown 10 oz glass bottles. Most Jamaican groceries carry it, but sometimes you can find it in other ethnic markets as well. It's non-alcoholic, tastes good, and packs a healthy dose of ginger. It can take a little getting used to, but it works. Ginger snaps also work. My kids like them because they are crunchy and easier to handle on board than a bottle. Just don't buy the cheap ones. I have also had success with non-drowsy formula Dramamine. Half a pill each, an hour before you leave the dock, is good. Consult your pediatrician to be sure. Good luck! Peter H23 "Raven"

Crystalized ginger, available in the spice section

of any decent supermarket. It's little "rocks" of ginger that taste like candy. The kids will love 'em. However, LaDonna's right...keeping 'em too active to let their inner ears lose equilibrium is the best way to deal with it.

I had a V-8!

My wife and I found out by accident that V-8 juice works great. One little 6 ounce can seems to do the trick. Chris

See the advice in the reference article

Personally I get seasick on a powerboat more often than on a sailboat. The part about having someone take the helm really works!

Be careful with V8

Cuz if it doesn't work, what a mess! Actually, it may work well cuz it's putting something of reasonable substance (but easily digestible) into your stomach. LaDonna

Hey Tim

Wasn't the Relief Band that group that played for the farmers charity concert some years ago?

Dehydration

Make sure they are drinking plenty of water and not getting dehydrated from the sun and wind.
