Looks like "ramming" is the operative word here!

The sailors aboard Sea Shepard should be supported for the work they do. Whaling is ILLEGAL and Japan needs to stop it IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!
That skipper should be stripped of his license and run through with a harpoon.
Think again.

First whaling is NOT illegal in international waters.

Second, that Sea Shepard boat OVERTOOK the ship trying to foul the whaler's prop, then turned, slowed in the path of the ship and was trying to aim lasers at the bridge in an effort to blind the crew. The SS boat was wrong, this is basic seamanship stuff.

This is not the political forum. Please take the whale hugging there.

It seems obvious

The Sea Shepard boat put itself in harms way. No way could the whaler avoid the collision. This has nothing to do with whaling, or anti whaling. Put yourself in front of a big ship that cannot manueve quickly, your gonna get run over.

I was looking for the complete video on this. Since you know what happened maybe you could give me a link to this knowledge base you have.

I'm not judging the politcal aspects of the incident, I just wanted to see what happened.
Looks like maybe the lasers worked.....

What was the name of the Green Peace boat they took care of a while back?

Re: Green peace

Paulj- go to the link posted. There are several videos on that page, and at least one (sorry I don't remember the name) shows (from the whaler) the SS boat passing the whaler close on the port side, crossing just in front of the whaler's bow, then looping around and stopping or greatly slowing ahead and slightly to starboard of the whaler, then the collision, with the whaler just catching the SS bow. Another video on that page (taken from a 3rd ship) shows the colision from when the SS boat slowed until the collision, and it looks like the whaler ws turning first toward the SS (starboard), then to port, and the collision. Its hard to tell just from those if the collision was deliberate. Looks like there is enough blame to go around. The SS boat definitely put itself in harm's way. Be interesting to see how this turns out. -Paul

Looks like the Sea Shepard was trying to win the Darwin Award.

Re: Green peace

Apparently there is not much room for dissenting points of view. I looked up the term "piracy" in the dictionary an this is what I found, "Piracy is a war-like act committed by private parties (not affiliated with any government) that engaged in acts of robbery and/or criminal violence at sea." I'll let you decide if pursuing, harassing, forcing collision and endangering lives at sea, is or not an act of "criminal violence" . Read fast before it dissapears.

Re: Green peace

The politics of whaling notwithstanding, I have been astounded to watch a few of the "Whale Wars" episodes. As a long-time safety conscious sailor, it breaks my heart to see 'Sea Shepard' captain Paul Watson send young, very idealistic, volunteers out in small boats in the Southern Ocean who lack most, if not all, of the skills such adventures necessitate. It is often a comedy of errors to see these untrained people try to launch, or recover, an outboard powered RIB from the deck of the moving 'Sea Shepard.' On many occasions, these small boats have been lost in fog, bad weather, and darkness only to learn that most of the crews lacked even basic skills needed to operate a VHF or GPS successfully.

Re: Green peace

The video in your first post is "Ady Gil rammed by Shonan Maru No. 2, view from MV Bob Barker" and shows the whaler turning back and forth.
"ady gil ramming japanese whaling vessel" shows wake behind AG just prior to collision-did they power up forward instead of reverse?
Cannot find the video showing AG passing whaler on port, then crossing to starboard- IIRC it was at least 4-5 mnutes long, and I don't see one that long tonight. Sorry. -Paul

Just for the record, this is not a Green Peace operation. The captain broke away from Green Peace for not being aggressive enough and formed the Sea Sheppard society.
Green Peace doesn't believe in the tactic's being used and does not assist the Sea Shepard group.

Re: Green peace

For the record, I don't think whales should be taken for commercial purposes since there is a substitute for all the products .. that said, I do not in any way condone the wrecklessness and agression toward the ship that the Ady Gill's captain chose to exhibit. I saw the video of them on the port side of the ship, towing a cable to foul the ship's prop.. passing close under the bow from port to starboard .. then slowing to almost stopped on the starboard side then from the ship, it looked like they accelerated into the path of the ship.. many changes in speed and heading.. and an attempt to disable the ship There is the thing with the laser attempt to annoy and temporarily blind the pilot as well.. I really don't agree with this kind of horseplay and agression .. If they really want to do something, they could use video and ad campaigns to sway public opinion in Japan and other whaling countries to get the people to make a demand change.. Not nearly as fun for adrenaline junkies but immensely more effective, and probably less expensive than operating a fleet of vessels and people.

Re: Green peace

Seems like some YouTube stuff is being removed as money grubbers start fighting over copyrights to the videos..
