Hello all, We're planning a trip to the sea of cortez next spring. Does anyone have a recommendation on electronic charts for that area? I will be using a laptop with a GPS reciever attatched and am looking for some feedback on which package to use. War stories and/or experiences would be great. Any other advice regarding trailering down there would be greatly appreciated also. I must admit, I'm a little nervous about trailering our 260 into Mexico.

Hi Ross, I don't know if you've run across it yet, but here's a link to the Sea of Cortez forum, which I visit from time to time as I've always hoped to make the trip some day. Mike

Done it

Our H260 is in the Sea of Cortez now. Been in a slip at San Carlos for almost a year. Before that we trailered her down to Kino Bay 2 times. We also had our Mac 26 there several times. Take it slow, Don't drive at night. The Sea of Cortez site is good. Read all you can. THe E-charts that are available are fair. But they are based on the last survey done in the late 1800's. So in places they are miles off. I would suggest buying Gerry Cunningham's cruising guides and charts from http://www.gerrycruise.com/. It is the most up to date info available. In the Winter/Spring watch for "Norther's"; winds that blow straight down the Gulf at 20-30 knots for 2-3 days straight. Bad stuff. Always have in mind a good anchorage with protection from the north. The Sea can build up to 10+ ft in no time!!
