Sea breeze and waves

Seeking some advice. I was out sailing last week in my 170 with my main reefed and jib unfurled. Thrilling but mannerly sailing with 1-2 foot waves and about 18 knot wind. I dropped the main and furled the jib while still about 100 ft out, with plan to motor in (my dock is in only about 2 foot of water so can't sail in w/o CB and rudder) in with my 2.5 HP Nissan. My only problem was that the waves almost washed me into shore about 10 cabins up from mine - ended up hoping off the boat and walking it in. Not a great way to show off my seamanship, but I got it in safely. What have been your experiences sailing in with a sea breeze and waves?

Center board

Couldn't you have used a little of the centerboard? Even just a foot of it down would have helped a little.

CB

Franklin - I do need to experiment with that, including marking my CB line/pendant so I know how much CB is down. Have you found having even just a little of your CB down reduces leeway? I also find that the efficiency of my rudder when raised up even halfway (to accomodate the shallow depth) is drastically reduced. Heading up more into the waves would have been a good idea as well. I also should have taken down my sails and started the motor further out from shore to give me more time to get things under control. It all happened so fast.

Is when I had a CB boat. So long ago that I don't remember much except always having some keel down. My slip was very shallow too...got a great rate on it because no other boat could use it. I do think that if you kept a little board down and flip the rudder to the shallow position, you should be able to do just fine. I wasn't on the shore so the largest waves I had were 1'.
