SDS Battery Monitor

I have an SDS battery monitor on 2 batteries on my Catalina 30TR, 1983. In preparation to launch I hook up to shore power to charge the batteries. In the past the bar graph lights on the monitor go all the way over showing the batteries are receiving a charge. When I disconnect form shore power the bar graph shows 12.6 and each battery. The batteries have 2 seasons on them and the water in each cell is fine. Last weekend when I stopped working in the boatyard for lunch I noticed the lights in the bar graph were reading about 13.5. I thought something happened to the SDS as I have never witnessed this when hooked to shore power. I took the SDS apart and the two 15 amp fuses are ok and the 110 outlets in the cabin are getting 110. Is there anything amiss? I have the SDS manual and it doesn't address this. I don't believe SDS is still around to call as I was unable to find them. Can anyone help me?

as i think i remember

when you first stop charging the batteries should be up arround 13.4 or 5 but after they sit a half hour or so the charge settles in in mid to high 12.s i think thats normal. i may be wrong, and it wont take long to find out here! this will be interesting at least to me!

I don't think you have a problem....

Ed, summed it up pretty well. It may take some time for the batteries to settle down to 12.6volts.

Battery Charging Info

suggest you checkout and read the Ample Power Primer. You can find it at www.amplepower.com. It explains how batteries get charged, the best way to do it and all the voltage information you need to know. It sounds like your charger and monitor are working fine. You need to learn why and this reference explains it well. Also, the West Marine Advisors, in electrical, what batteries need, is also very good.
