It's that time again. I'm looking for referrals/recomendations for San Diego boatyards. I need to have my bottom painted on a H340. The last yard that did it had a good price however the boat was returned with paint overspray, from adjacent boats, all over the topsides. It was a crusty dull haze all over the deck, ports, SS, and topsides. It was tiny white paint droplets and the yard denied any responsibility even though the yard was the only possible source. So needless to say I don't wish to use thier services again. That brings me to this source to ask for your recomendations and experences with local yards. Where did you go? What did you have done? What did you pay? How were the results? How long did it take? Would you use them again? How about someone to compound and wax a boat in it's slip? How about any other services in the area that you might have used? For instance I had a new Dodger and Bimini Custom made and installed last year. San Diego Canvas Co. did the work. Results were very good job and quality, the only downside was the time involved. Took almost 3 months from ordering to completion. The job didn't take long just the scheduling. San Diego bottom paint

Dwain, Had my bottom paint, cutlass bearing done in June by Shelter Island Boatyard (619 222 0481), Wayne Morrison is the rep. Total cost all inclusive was $1200 and change. Was very impressed with the work and the turn time was three days. They have the job next time the "whiskey chaser" needs marine life repellant. As far as boatcare at the dock, Cabrillo Isle Marina (6192976222, Jim is dockmaster) (we slip there) has a couple of guys who are way reasonable. I have their card on my boat if you want the number. Email me at Flutini@cox.net. Always looking for new san diego cruisers. Cheers Rick and Pam

San Diego Service

Rick Thanks for the lead, that's exactly what I was looking for. I'll contact Shelter Island BY. We're slipped in Marina Cortez, next door to you, but live in Tempe, AZ. So it's difficult to research services from long distances. I don't understand it, but the wife doesn't like to spend our entire time with the boat doing boat chores. So it's best for me to have some of the time consuming things done. Again thanks dwain s/v Dancy

How bout that

Dwain, What a small world. We are still right next door to ya over in Glendale. If you would like, drop us an email at Flutini@cox.net. We could exchange phone numbers and see where it goes from there. I work for Southwest Airlines so we get over to SAN quite a bit. Probably have a good story or two to tell over an adult beverage. Cheers Rick and Pam

Yard Management

Dwain, The success of any haulout begins with written quotes and up front micro-management. Obviously, you were absent while these other vessels were being painted. This should be a slam dunk, 1 day job. If planned correctly hauled out on Friday painted on Saturday and splashed Monday. The occurance of overspray reflects only your poorly managed project. RL

I not sure who your refering to when you state this was a poorly managed job. If it was the boatyard I would agree. However if you think it was my responibilty to oversee the workings of a major "professional" boatyard I disagree. The vessel was on the hard for two weeks for work other than the bottom and all of the work was done well and according to the quotes. AS you say I was not present to daily supervise all of the yards operations. I do other things than just play with my boat. When I leave a boat, car, plane, house, whatever in the hands of a "professioinal" I expect them to use "due care" and not cause harm to the item. The very same that is expected of myself in my profession. Anyway, thanks for stating the obvious. dwain

More on bottom paint

Dwain, I gotta admit I got a great chuckle from Rob and his response. You "poor manager" you. He surely just returned from a day of harassing his crew and missed his lineup while docking. I mean I know we can be frank here but he doesnt know you from adam. Maybe you were the guy who invented "post its". Just for the record, I didnt stand there and watch when they painted "whiskey chaser". They guaranteed their work and I took them on a handshake. Oh and my credit card number. I know that is risky sometimes but my broker gave them high praise. I think im gonnna go and watch my wife cook... make sure she doesnt manages the stove correctly. I have done several other projects as im sure you have. Look forward to learning about optimizing our cruisers. Cheers Rick

yea I wasn't sure if that was aimed at me or the yard. Hey we're having dinner tomorrow with Peggy & John Stark at my mother's house. He's also with SWA. You probably know him. After all how many people could possible work for SWA?(just kidding) dwain

Dinner At Rick's House!!!

Rick, A properly managed kitchen has to be producing some wonderful new meals for you and yours. Now, if you could just apply this to your next haulout, I am sure that you would be happy with your end result. Bon Apple-tits!! RL

Properly managed kitchen

Hey Rob, As a matter of fact, she burned the bisqits. Is it true that you have to thaw them first. I swear turn you back for one second... Maybe one of those french maid cooking outfits is in order here. Sure beats foul weather gear. Cheers Rick Maybe you do have a senso o' humor after all

The world gets smaller

Dwain, John's name does ring a bell but I cant seem to place the face. Funny how small a world we live in. We are going over to San on the 26th for three or four days. Anyway... good luck! Rick Flutini@cox.net
