Hey- as anyone drilled holes thru the toe rail near the aft stachions to install scuppers to drain the water that puddles along the deck?
thanks

My boat is on a stand, and water pools on the decks at the forward end of the cockpit...I thought it was because the boat is not quite level. You mean this will happen when the boat is in the water too?

If it were me, I would try to keep the diesel tank full, and the water and holding tanks empty. Would it help to move stuff aft?

Cat,

I have a 1980 cat 30. Eight years ago I had my boat in the yard for over a month. After spashing the boat I did notice water started puddling at the same location port & stbd sides. I didn't have this problem before the haulout.

Two reasons I've toyed with was maybe the stands were not positioned correctly along the length of the boat or maybe not enough of them for balanced support which caused sag.

Reason two was maybe adding to the problem, it might have been the rigging tension as I didn't need to do any work with my spars etc. at the time so my tension was set as is. I don't have construction drawings on the stiffener design & location but would bet this could also be part of the problem.

Add these two together and they may have helped cause this so called sag. Looking at the boat design, I'm pretty sure this was my case. I do not like the puddles and always have to celan the dirt & dry them so as not to track footprints on my deck.

I always wanted to contact Kent @ Catalina in Calif. to see if he is aware of this problem, but as usual life goes on & it's not a priority item at this time. If you ask him, please let me know what he says.

If your going to haul the boat next time see to it that you have plenty of stands properly set. I would have triple set stands in the area of the puddling. Maybe relax your fore & aft stays abit while on the hard. I will take this approach next time. Fiberglas will sag & deform somewhat from temperature and tension points with inadequate stiffening support.

Hope this helps,

CR

I don't have the stick up on my boat as it sits on the stand. I just didn't pay attention when we put the boat down on the stand. We are going to lift it to adjust the stand to correct this problem. Wish I'd have noticed this or thought about it when we set it, though.

i hear ya

GG,
Yea, we learn as we go. This has been a sore point for me for awhile. Try the extra stands in the affected area.

Also if you notice this is where the deck design changes, and I'll bet that is a problem with a stiffening design. if you look under the deck, you really don't see any change in interior support design. Unlike the cabin portion of the deck, seems to add to support then that ends at the cockpit and the longitudinal lines have changed. the coming at the cockpit was designed to add stiffness, but I believe not enough.

Let me know if you find any additional info pal.

Re: i hear ya

it is the design of the boat not how is sits on land or in the water or adjustment of the mast. just a low point on the deck.

Cat 30,

I thought I made mention that the problem is in the design. Structurally, this is in the "thin" part of the boat.

Can you explain to me why my puddling started after my haulout, when I did not have this before? Obviously It's a low point of the structure, but I covered that. Without some expert advice from Catalina, you can't assume that blocking and/or tension has no affect while on the hard.

Vessel change....

OK everyone, I have moved from Jersey Coast, looking to buy a new/used Catalina. Glutten for punishment! Looking at a Catalina MKII. Any suggestions on engine, etc. The Northeastern coast is a different experience as well as different sailing and rigging requirements (beat the hell out of your boat!)...ruff & hard bottom. What is it that I need to know down here?
