I was wondering about drainage of the cockpit when the boat is in the water. Do I leave the gate valve open so the cockpit can drain off rain water? Where is the water level relative to the cockpit floor? Thanks, Dan

Yup

Unless you upgrade to the rear scuppers put out by Catalina Direct you will have to leave the valve open. Not sure exactly where the water line is but if you look where the keel cable comes up through the rubber hose up to the winch it is somewhere between the hose clamp at the bottom and the top of the hose. Scary ain't it. I've heard horror stories of people cranking up their keel and a snag on the cable grabs an exposed wire fron the worn hose and pulls it off. Good reason to replace or at least inspect both at regular intervals.

Thanks

Thanks Carl, I heard the same stories, I'm in the process of replacing the hose and turning ball now. The cockpit must drain, otherwise I'd be bailing. I'll close it when I launch, then open it and see what happens. Can you tell its my first sailboat?

just a comment

If you want to know about where the waterline is, the turning ball for the keel cable on mine is just below the waterline. It's barely submerged. I just checked this with a flashlight and a mirror. Although I have the new style with the rear scuppers that were mentioned, the upgrade to adding the new style isn't a bad suggestion. The holes are bigger and the water drains something like 6 times faster. This is an advantage in the water if you get a knock down and water in the cockpit or if your boat is on the trailer during the off season and your scuppers happen to try to clog with things like leaves and it's raining. I am hard pressed to imagine why the scupper valve would be closed unless you are trying to collect rain water in the cockpit for washing your feet.

Never close valve

Dan, The scupper drain valve will never be closed. Leave it open all the time. If you have a drain for the sink, there will be a line that runs into the scupper drain hose. You should have a shut off valve on that line. This should be CLOSED when the sink is not being used. If you valve to the scupper ever became clogged, the water would back up the sink hose and come into the cabin!! I removed this line because we do not use the sink, or the gally. If this is confusing let me know. If you think about it for a moment it is real simple. You will love this boat, it is alot of fun. Dale
