I have recently purchased a 1976 Catalina 22. There are 2 drains in the cockpit floor that are piped to a tee, which is piped to a valve and then piped thru the floor of the battery compartment. Does anyone know where this drains to? and should the valve be left open or closed? There is a bilge pump laying loose in the gas tank compartment, but it is currenly not connected to anything. Thanks, for the help. Ralph

C22 drain

The drain goes through to a thru hull and overboard. Leave the valve closed when not on board. Also check out the C22 Association website.

be careful

Be careful about leaving your boat with the valve closed unless you have the extra, direct through the transom, scupper(s) installed, especially if you live where it is possible to get a lot of rain quickly. Without someplace to drain, your cockpit could fill up with water to above the sill going into the cabin. I keep my valve open but I carefully have checked the integrety of the clamps, valve, and hoses to lessen the chances of any leaks or problems.

Open Vs. Closed

The failure point in the cockpit drain system on the older boats is usually the pipe that is glassed into the hull itself. The valve mounts above this so when the pipe falls/breaks lose the boat sinks because the valve falls off with the pipe. The first year I had my boat I removed the valve and ran soft flexable hoses from the drain ports to a "T" fitting above the pipe stub and then another soft hose from the "T" to the outlet pipe. I also put a box around the drain outlet made from 2" styrafoam so nothing can hit this assembly. This winter I am running 1" PVC pipe from the drain outlets (I am using bathroom sink drain fittings mounted to the cockpit floor) to the transom and exiting the boat there. These two pipes run together down the center of the boat under the cockpit floor. A piece of rubber hose or other flexable joint should be included on each run. Everything is then glassed inplace and the old outlet pipe is removed and glassed over, top and bottom. When I first had the boat I found out that rain can indeed fill the cockpit if the valve is closed or the drains plugged. It's ugly! Ray
