Consider watermarks on your images. They are easy to add with Photoshop or similar software and would not hinder the information presentation. If people can't use your images, they probably won't use anything else.
Roger,

In order to not hinder the information they need to be out of the way, top, bottom, side, edge frame etc.. I just came off a photog forum and all the pros agree they are useless, time consuming and really do little to no good because thieves just crop them out. A good effective watermark ruins the photo one that does not just gets cropped...

The bigger issue is that I have over 2300 images on-line with MANY of them linked to in forums so I hate to take them down. I could password protect them but then none of the forum pics work..

There is no way to add watermarks and re-post the pictures without breaking all those links!!! I have already found many of my pics that have been cropped or manipulated to not appear as mine but the software I am using is good and finds digital matches even if the pics are cropped or tweaked..

They also list an address in Australia. Litigation my be more successful there. I'm guessing that's where most of their business occurs.
Litigation! C'mon guys I do this work for FREE, at lest for now, and dig into MY pocket for all the expenses, over 2k last year alone, I am not going to dig deeper to fund a site I do for other people as a "nice guy" service.

As another poster said this company is not legit anyway so any money spent is just wasted.

I have looked at many of your fine photos, a suggestion that may help, why not superimpose your name or what ever you wish on each photo before putting it on your site. I see this done all the time on artist type sites to protect their paintings or photos.

Welcome to MY world...

I've been dealing with theft of my work, including whole chapters of my book, for at least 10 years. We have two choices: Live with it, or don't post anything.

MS,

It is easy enough to watermark the images in place or script an in-place replacement. Plenty of tools available, but the specific tools would depend on the server and what ways it can be accessed.

Watermarks will work fine for technical photography.

Let me know if you need help.

The problem with watermarking here is that all the photos reside online. So MS would still have to re-upload all those photos after marking them.

And even if he did, it still does not protect his text.

Also I have thousands of posts on this and other forums containing photos and the web address is specific to the photo. If I take them down, water mark, and put them back up all those photos in those thousands of posts are GONE!!!

Like I said, depending on the server backend, it is trivial to automate the process. Open-source tools like wget and imagemajick would make watermarking free and painless to automate.

As for the text, it is less useful for a jerk plagiarist to steal it without the photos.

MS, the URLs would be identical, depending on the server backend. Is the problem that you're not hosting your own photos? I wonder if your hosting service would be willing to help.

Scott, according to the pbase forums, pbase.com does not support this. You have to add the WM before uploading.

Watermarking an artistic photo works well because if you crop it, you lose the artistc integrity. A technical photo is totally different. Your watermark may need to overlay a critical detail on the photo to be effective.

When you talk to them you might want to let them know that a cutlass is a sword or a former GM automobile and a cutless is bearing used on boats.
Sorry to hear all the details. I shall put a Hindu Pox upon his family, a boil on his neck, fungus in his crotch, and a hideous hair on his wife's upper lip. OK make that a second hair. His cow should also die from udder neglect.

Anyone know if the hosting company, based in California, has any responsibility/liability in theft of intellectual property?

I spoke with them today and they were going to ask them to remove it. Said they were not hosting but rather supplying bad width, what ever that means.

MS, they are BSing you, send them a letter as shown here [link] and get them to take it down. They're responsible for removing or blocking access to infringing content once notified that it exists.

Also, with regard to PBase, have you checked to see if the URL for a picture changes when you go through the "update image" process as detailed here [link] under the "Can I replace an image without losing comments and hit counts" heading?

Guys I appreciate all the effort but please do not send any more emails. This is NOT a real company!!! They appear to be nothing more than an email phishing outfit. When you send them an email they now have REAL verified working email addresses to SELL to others.

Not one individual that I know of who has emailed them has received a response. One guy even opened an email address under a very "marine" sounding name and stated he was a wholesaler and wanted to buy stock of 20,000 marine bearings if they could provide him with a sample of the product, metallurgy reports, certifications and ISO compliance or similar. NOTHING!!

If you want to help please let me know the steps I need to take to get Google to stop indexing them in searches and Yahoo, Bing etc. etc... Sorry for dragging you guys into this but these SCUMBAGS will stop at nothing to scam the general public including using my work to do it..
