Finally got my wife to go out and anchor over night here in Florida with PGI sailing club, her first with the club and here in Florida.
Any way she ask me about some screening for the companionway,we have screens for all hatch's and windows plus yes AC and Gen so if it gets really too hot I will flip the switch so she is cool and very happy to anchor over night here Florida, she did do over nighter up in NY with me many times.
Any one that added screening to the companionway please show me and don't forget photo's,I am looking for idea's and what works best.

I made screens with the diy aluminum pieces you get at HD or Lowes. The corners will bend enough to shape to the hatch boards and they fit in there. The top one laid where the hatch fit. You will have to a very fine screen for FL noseums.

Nick...

I made drop on screen panels (half and full length) for the sliding hatch on my companionway from essentially the same screen window kit that Charlie referred to.

On my last boat, I made up drop board screen panels out of 3/8" plywood, using aluminum screening with plexi slide ins for weather protection. I've seen fancier ones done out of teak and Starboard, but these will work.

Here's a pic of that project:

Here is probably the quickest & easiest solution. We have one and it works fine.

On my '85 H'31 we had a regular screen made with a frame. The disadvantage was the we would need to keep the companionway slide closed when the screeen was in place to keep them critters out.

The screen option from SBO allows the slider to be open for more airflow.

I made one like the one on SBO with no see-um screen and fishing sinkers for my H25. Easy and quick to make on any sewing machine. Worked great.

I made removable companion way doors with removable screens. Actually I will be installing what I made next week when we are at the boat. I am anxious to see how they work.

I've used the screen Steve Dion recommends...

for seven years now. Works great, easy to put on and off, and the slider stays open too.

Roll up screen

We have a clever roll up companionway screen for our 2000 H340. I cut two pieces of wood, one that fits along the bottom of the companionway and one that fits at the top, just under and tight up against the sliding hatch when it's closed. The wood was finished, stained and varnished. I then stretched a large piece of flexible screening between them with some extra width to overlap the sides of the companionway and tuck into the tracks for the boards. The screen was secured to the wood with small strips of wood, but it could easily be stapled. Voila! a flexible, roll up screen - easy to use, easy to store, easy to repair. The ends of the two wooden supports have to be sculptured a bit to fit into the track. I can't take credit for this as I got the idea from another boater. I'll take some pictures if anyone is interested.

Roll up screen photos

Here are a few photos of my roll up screen. In use, the extra screen fabic along the edges is tucked into the tracks for the companionway boards and usually makes an adequate seal. Alternately you could use some plastic or rubber hose or round foam insulation to keep the screen edges secure.
