My Yanmar 2GM has recently started to make a screeching noise on start-up, the noise seems loudest near the back of the engine, by the flywheel, it increases with Rpm's but goes away after about 2-3 min. I have not the slightest idea as to what is causing this and unfortunately the Yanmar service manual I ordered has not yet arrived. Any advice? Thanks for your help. - Chris

screech

My yanmar 3GM developed a loud screetch two years ago. Turned out to be the drive shaft rubbing on the sternmost part of the bronze packing gland assembly. I discovered it when I disconnected the shaft coupling and turned the shaft by hand. It was an alignment problem. Hope yours is from the same situation.

Screech

Chris, Perhaps the screech is coming from the alternator belt as it sometimes does on cars. When you first start up the alternator is on full charge and this decreases after a few minutes running. The belt slip also diminishes and so does the noise. If the belt tension is correct then try a trick shown me by a garage mechanic. With the engine stopped pull the dipstick and wipe the oily end on each side of the belt. Re start and screech gone. A little oil does no harm as all belts are made to cope in oily environments. But only just a drop and not too much.
