I have been getting a screeching sound while motoring. I just bought a 2001 Catalina 310 and had to motor 6 hours and it made the sound once. Yesterday I motored for about an hour and it did it 3 times. I was cruising at 2000rmp and when I cut back the throttle, the sound stops. I then increase the throttle and it is fine. It almost sounds like the propeller is slipping. Could this be a transmission problem? Thank you.

If you have a PSS dripless packing it may need to be burped. It could also be the fan belt that powers the alternator. Did you check the transmission oil level? It's color/smell is the best indication of problems. It should be light red and not smell burnt. Too sharp an edge on the prop can also cause the prop to sing.

Thanks Ken. I do have a dripless packing and i haven't checked the transmission fluid. I will have to check the manual but how do you burp the driplesss?

Water Injection
On later and larger model Catalina's, they have added a small hose from the engine water system to the PSS fitting. This is to solve the sometimes problem of a air bubble at the joint.

Belt tension
Check your alternator belt tension. If too loose, it could be slipping and screeching. When properly tensioned, there should be about an inch of deflection when you press against the belt. Randy

that screech might be one of the pumps or the alternator freezing up. If you can loosen the belt try to rotate each of the pullys that ride on the belt. If one is siezing then that is the problem. REplace it before it siezes altogether.
