I have been getting a screeching sound while motoring. I just bought a 2001 Catalina 310 and had to motor 6 hours and it made the sound once. Yesterday I motored for about an hour and it did it 3 times. I was cruising at 2000rmp and when I cut back the throttle, the sound stops. I then increase the throttle and it is fine. It almost sounds like the propeller is slipping. Could this be a transmission problem? Thank you.

Stuffing Box
I have a 2002 310. It started making a similar noise the second year that I had the boat. When I had the boat laid up for the Winter, I replace the packing material in the stuffing box with the Gore Tex packing. I haven't heard the noise since (3 years now). I think that you'll find the noise is coming from the stuffing box.

Did you open the hood?
i,e stop the boat, open the engine compartment, poke around and find out at least what direction the sound was comign from? Two things very hard for us to help you with on the internet: sound and smell.

I had a two blade prop on and changed to a three blade. Between 1500 and 2000 rpm I had a screeching noise which I thought was the cutlass bearing. Took it to my mechanic who checked engine ,tranny , and etc. Ready for this one? He said he has been running into props that have been tuned with too sharp an edge recommending ....... filing the edge of the blades. In the fall I will do so. Good Luck

A cat will usually break the belt...
but a mouse will just make a mess. To check a fan belt just spray it with water to see if noise changes, get a piece of heater hose and stick one end in your ear and move other end around to find source. Tim

Alternator belt.
John: I would first go with an alternator belt. Be sure that it is properly tensioned. This is approx. 1/4 turn of the belt when tensioned properly. If you belt has been doing this (and you probably do not know about it) it may have become glazed. You should change belts (save the old one for an emergency). If this does not work, then you can start working on some of these other issues. I am suprised that the surveyor did not pick up on this prior to your taking ownership.
