Scratched Hatch Boards

Having cut a piece of 3/4 inch plywood for winter storage, I have my hatch boards at home. The two wood boards were easy -- sand them down and three coats of Cetol. The two plastic "boards" are a different story. They're scratched up. Does anyone know how to refinish whichever type of plastic they're made of? Thanks in advance. Don/t worry

Lexan hatch boards can be compoounde3d out elinating those little pesky scratches. Use Fines-it by 3-M, good stuff and apply using buffer at low speed. High speed has the tendacy to melt and oh boy that can be messy possilby worse than Barnicle Bill/. you will need to do this several times or more. Once done, they look better than Barnicle Bill. Time vs. Cost

Dave is right, they can be polished out, but I found a place locally where I can get new ones made of the same color, thickness, and size for around $40 for two pieces. To me, $40 is cheaper than the time spent polishing. Might consider it.

...Or call the factory

I recently decided to replace the hatch boards for my H23; I don't have any plastic in my hatch, but I thought I'd use original spec pinboards as opposed to the obviously non-marine plywood boards some previous owner put on my boat. I spoke to Mike Thomas at the factory (he answers the 'retail parts sales' extension), and placed an order for a complete set of wood hatch boards for 50-something dollars. I expect them to show up in about a week and a half, based on what he told me. I can't imagine the lexan boards costing much more... --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind'

cost

Give me 10-15 minutes will take care of the problem and that is chaeaper than purchasing new ones Crazy Dave

Nice Boards, Dave

Mine were so damaged/scratched/gouged/mistreated/etc. that after two hours working with one panel I could hardly notice an improvement. For me, the new panels were cheaper.

Response to Jay Hill

Most of the time, it is merely simple scratches. Apparently, your scratches are now being described as major gouges and you are right, replacing them is the best route to go. I can only answer on the description of the problem seen on this forum which was scratches and I have buffed many out over the years unless too far gone for example, deep gouges Crazy Dave

Let me know if I can help

Dear Harvey, I work with plastics for a living and most likely the hatches you speak of are plexiglas and if they aren't too badly scratched you can clean them up with a product I sell called Novus #1,#2,#3. You would start with #3 and work up to #1 in steps by buffing out the first two. All this takes fairly little time. Another route to consider is replacing them with a product called Starboard,it's a great plastic for marine applications. If you wish to contact me about these items you can e-mail me at RiSKIT37.cs.com
